Investment cast 440C high-carbon stainless steel head, dipped in rust inhibitor and machine ground to a sharp edge. Mounted on a cross-grain laminated Baltic Burch handle that is oil dipped, carved for comfort and control. Comes with a full grain leather slotted sheath. Perfect for heavy cutting and chopping in the field or wood carving.
The knife-edge is hand applied by skilled artisans, and is knife-sharp.
The axe head is hung on the handle using two methods of attachment: a stainless steel set-screw to hold the handle in the head and a stainless steel roll pin that “locks” the head to the handle.
The handle is made from laminated Baltic birch, which is known for its strength and durability. The laminate design was chosen because a conventional straight grain handle might be prone to cracking along grain lines given the ergonomic curvature of the handle. The handle design closely resembles the patterns and shapes of the Viking ship builders’ axes found in burial sites dating back to the 8th and 9th centuries.
Many of these ship-building axes were used by the Norsemen when they went “a Viking”, which resulted in many legends about their use on the battle fields across Europe, the British Isles, and north Africa during the Viking Era: 600-1100AD. A tool that became the protector!
The FireStone Carving Axe comes complete with a handcrafted full grain leather sheath.
